Fax is a technology with an expiry date. All across Europe, the analogue telephony connections required for a stable and secure fax data transfer are gradually being replaced by modern IP technology. In Switzerland, the analogue network will only remain part of the universal service obligation until the end of 2017. The IncaMail e-mail encryption service offers a secure digital alternative.

Digital data transfer is an obvious replacement for fax technology. Documents can be scanned and sent by e-mail. Unlike a fax, however, this method does not ensure complete data transfer. There is also no send protocol as evidence of transmission. Another major disadvantage is unencrypted forwarding over the Internet, which raises data protection issues.
