Stamps for railway enthusiasts, sports lovers and those with a sweet tooth

With its stamp dedicated to the opening of the Ceneri Base Tunnel, Swiss Post’s latest stamp issue is marking a major historic event: the New Rail Link through the Alps (NRLA) has been completed. The third stamp issue of 2020 is not just a treat for railway enthusiasts – it will also hold great appeal for sports lovers and those with a sweet tooth. The new stamps will be available from 3 September.

Rich Content Section

The opening of the Ceneri Base Tunnel is an extremely topical subject. When the tunnel comes into service in December 2020, it will mark the completion of the New Rail Link through the Alps (NRLA). This event is not just the final milestone in the Rhine-Alps corridor, an epic feat of engineering, but also a symbol of northern and southern Europe moving closer together. It is precisely this idea that is depicted in splendid colours on two stamps: a goods train in the north, and a passenger train in the south of Europe. Just like the trains that are linked by the Ceneri Base Tunnel, the two stamps are also connected by a gutter.

A treat for sports lovers

Swiss Post is writing another piece of history with its stamp dedicated to the UCI Road World Championships. The event was cancelled at short notice due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, Swiss Post still wishes to pay tribute to the tremendous efforts of the organization committee by issuing the stamp despite the current circumstances. Following the special stamp in honour of the Ice Hockey World Championship in the spring, this is the second stamp marking a major sporting event that ultimately could not take place. However, the stamp motif dedicated to the UCI Road World Championships not only depicts cycling, but also the region of Rebberge on Lake Geneva in the Canton of Vaud and the Valais Alps. The event would have been held in these areas.

Delectable temptation for those with a sweet tooth

The “Chocolate – from bitter to sweet” stamp will appeal greatly to anyone with a sweet tooth: the two stamps featuring the motifs of a cocoa bean and a bar of chocolate symbolize the long journey from the bitter fruit of the cacao tree to melt-in-the-mouth temptation.

You can find information on other motifs in the current issue and details about the new stamps in the latest edition of the collector’s magazine “Focus on stamps” oder unter swisspost.ch/stamps.
