Olympic fever grips Swiss Post with the “Swiss Olympic 2018” special stamp

Swiss Post is sharing in the excitement of Switzerland’s athletes by dedicating a special stamp to the Olympic sportsmen and sportswomen of the XXIII Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang. The stamp will be available at all Swiss Post stamp counters and self-operated branches from 29 January 2018.

When the Swiss delegation marches into the Pyeongchang Olympic Stadium at the opening ceremony of the XXIII Winter Games on 9 February 2018, Swiss Post will also be there with its special stamp. The stamp has a face value of 1 franc. The sheetlet features the striking ski jump in Pyeongchang and the mission statement #Allin4PyeongChang – a strong incentive for the sportsmen and sportswomen to champion the Olympic values. The stamp’s design has been clearly inspired by that of Swiss Olympic. The stamp joins a long series of Olympic special stamps issued by Swiss Post – most recently for the Vancouver 2010, Beijing 2008, Turin 2006 and Athens 2004 Games.

Good memories of the Winter Games in Asia

Following the 1988 Summer Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea will be hosting the Olympic family for the second time in February 2018, this time in Pyeongchang. Switzerland has reasonably good memories of those games three decades ago: with four medals – two silvers and two bronzes – the result was rather average. Earlier Winter Games in Asia were markedly more successful. The 1972 Olympic Games in Sapporo were simply legendary from a Swiss perspective: with its four gold, three silver and three bronze medals, Switzerland took third place in the medals table. Stars Bernhard Russi and Marie-Theres Nadig rose to fame in those days. In 1998, the Swiss delegation returned home from Nagano in Japan with seven medals in their bags. After Switzerland’s more recent even greater successes – nine medals in Vancouver and eleven in Sochi – there is reason to hope for an even larger haul in 2018.

The “Swiss Olympic 2018” special stamp is now available at all Swiss Post stamp counters and self-operated branches, as well as online at www.postshop.ch.
