Yello design own stamp

A significant number and two international stars from the Swiss music scene feature prominently in Swiss Post’s fourth stamp issue of 2016: as they release their 13th album, it is fitting that the electro pop duo Yello have designed the 13th celebrity stamp. Other highlights include moving Christmas stamps, a new Pro Juventute set and special stamps with Caribbean flair.

This year, for the first time since 2009, the cult Swiss group Yello have released a new album, called “Toy”. Dieter Meier and Boris Blank also ventured to Berlin at the end of October for the first time in their long careers to play their music live on stage. As part of the fourth stamp issue of 2016, Swiss Post has provided them with another highlight by dedicating a one-franc stamp to Yello. The funky stamp was designed by the creative duo themselves. Every year, Swiss Post uses celebrity stamps to honour personalities from the Swiss cultural scene and gives them the chance to design their own stamp. Those honoured include the recently deceased clown Dimitri, the comedian Emil Steinberger, the rapper Stress, and the musicians Stephan Eicher and Polo Hofer.

Maintaining tradition

Swiss Post brings joy to its customers every year with festive Christmas stamps. The Lucerne-based illustrator, Ludek Martschini, provides the postal festive spirit in 2016 with four delicate stamp motifs set against a snowy background. The Christmas stamps, also available in a set with matching Christmas cards, bridge the gap between the traditional, print and the digital, moving world together with the Post-App: if you scan the stamps with your smartphone you will be able to watch a festive Christmas video. Another stamp tradition is the joint stamp issue, a special stamp that Swiss Post issues every year in conjunction with another country. This year the joint stamp issue forges a link between Switzerland and the Dominican Republic. Switzerland has maintained very good economic, political and cultural relations with the Caribbean island nation for 80 years. The Pro Juventute special stamps with surcharge have also become a tradition. At the end of the year, the foundation is launching a new stamp set on the subject of “At school” with two stamp motifs. The proceeds from the surcharge go to projects supported by Pro Juventute. Yet another longstanding feature is the annual Stamp Day, which this year takes place in Aarwangen between 2 and 4 December as part of the PHILEXPO 2016. Swiss Post is issuing a miniature sheet with surcharge and a postal card to mark the occasion. Meanwhile, Basel SBB station has been added to the fourth issue of the “Swiss railway stations” set of definitive stamps.

And finally, Swiss Post is releasing the year book of Swiss stamps just in time for Christmas. The book contains all 48 original stamps issued by Swiss Post in 2016. Exclusively available this year. the black print of both “Gottardo 2016” special stamps featuring the bridge to mark the opening of the Gotthard Base Tunnel.
