New record number of children’s letters

As every year, Santa Claus was able to rely on competent support from Swiss Post employees during Advent last year. It helped Santa to answer exactly 20,546 children’s letters, a new record for the third year in a row.

The majority of replies – 11,493 – were sent to Western Switzerland, 3,267 to Ticino and 3,581 to German-speaking Switzerland. 340 replies were sent to children abroad. The five-strong Swiss Post team supporting Santa in Chiasso year after year went to great pains to reply even to letters with incomplete or incorrect sender details. As a result, more than 96.1 percent or 19,749 of all children’s letters were answered with a story and a small present. In the previous year, Swiss Post had received 18,699 children’s letters and enabled 17,971 replies to be sent.

The first letters often arrive at the team in Chiasso as early as the end of October. Swiss Post is proud to have once again had the privilege of fulfilling this wonderful task during the Christmas season – thanks to the commitment of its employees. For 65 years, letters have been read by a specialized team, sorted by language and – information about the sender’s address permitting – answered in one of three national languages or in English.

During the first children’s letters campaign in 1950/51, Swiss Post received 450 letters, including 250 from abroad.
