Maestro cards to be accepted in post offices from 2016

Swiss Post is expanding payment options in post offices. From 2016, Maestro cards will be accepted throughout Switzerland as an additional payment method for the purchase of postal services (letters and parcels) and third-party products (e.g. stationery and travel articles). The service will be implemented gradually.

In future, customers will be able to use their Maestro card at the post office counter to pay for postal transactions such as letter and parcel post or settle customs duties. Swiss Post intends to introduce this payment option throughout Switzerland by the end of 2016. By doing so, it is meeting customers’ needs for greater flexibility when paying for products and services in post offices.

Third-party products and postage stamps can already be paid for using the Maestro card in PostShops. By the end of 2016, card readers in all other post offices will be adapted to accept Maestro card payments for postal services and third-party products. For the time being, payment transactions can still only be processed by PostFinance Card or in cash, as in- and outpayments are subject to regulatory provisions unlike standard postal sales transactions.

It is expected to take two years to convert and procure the 5,000 or so card readers required. The new service will be gradually introduced at post office counters throughout Switzerland to make the exchange of card readers as efficient as possible.
