Swiss Post enables school leavers to gain entry into the world of work by offering attractive, multi-disciplinary apprenticeships. It is not only the theoretical aspects which are covered; apprentices get the chance to apply what they have learned by getting involved in exciting projects. With over 60,000 employees, Swiss Post is one of the largest employers in Switzerland, and is training over 2,000 apprentices.

Interesting and practical training

All over Switzerland, Swiss Post is currently training over 2,000 apprentices in 12 different basic training courses recognized by the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI). An internship programme also provides school leavers with the opportunity to gain an insight into the world of work with on-the-job commercial training or information technology basics. Because Swiss Post believes in versatility and instilling a sense of individual responsibility, a system of rotation is used during the apprenticeship which ensures apprentices gain experience in a number of different work areas. This broadens their knowledge, and equips the young people with the social skills they need when dealing with customers, team members and managers. The future retail professionals learn to work independently in one of eight trainee-run post offices, where between eight and twelve trainees are responsible for managing every aspect of day-to-day business. Experienced advisors are on hand to give the apprentices support and guidance as required.

Ideal preparation for the job market

A working combination of theory and practice gives the apprentices the best preparation for entry into the labour market. By getting involved in real projects, the apprentices can assert themselves in the labour market later on. The success rate confirms this, with 98 per cent of last year’s apprentice intake graduating this summer. Swiss Post is committed to offering young professionals the opportunity to continue working for the Group after they complete their apprenticeships. Eight out of ten candidates who complete their apprenticeship and who wish to stay at Swiss Post are offered employment.

New vocational training as call center agents

Swiss Post is always developing its training curriculum based on identified needs. This year, four apprentices began their three-year training within customer service in Fribourg to become call center agents. The truck driver training programme was extended this summer to include a truck driver apprenticeship available to both male and female applicants.
