The members of Switzerland’s national ice hockey team made Swiss sporting history by winning the silver medal at the World Championship. After achieving nine victories in a row, the Swiss team trained by Sean Simpson was defeated only by host team Sweden. Final goalkeeper Roman Josi won a special award: he was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Thanks to their extraordinary team spirit and passionate style of play, the Swiss ice hockey players gained support from fans far beyond the national borders. The Swiss ice hockey team has only achieved similar success on one previous occasion: Switzerland won its only other silver medal when it hosted the World Championship in Davos in 1935.

Swiss Post is issuing an event stamp to commemorate this splendid achievement. The stamp has a face value of one franc and is being issued in the form of miniature sheets of ten stamps. The stamp will be available from all philatelic salespoints and larger post offices from 31 May; it will be sold in all post offices from 1 June. Previous event stamps issued by Swiss Post have been dedicated to Roger Federer (10.4.2007, Wimbledon title), the Alinghi sailing team (7.3.2004, victory in the America’s Cup) and Bertrand Piccard (5.5.1999, non-stop balloon flight around the world).
